hangboard

A hangboard, also called a fingerboard, is a training tool for climbers consisting of

various holds used to improve grip strength and finger endurance

Form Development

The goal was to create edges that were comfortable to hang upon and that replicated the form of outdoor rock holds.

Through 3D printing I found a method to create forms sturdy enough to hang just enough body weight to test the boards.

I used a grid of intersecting sketches to manipulate

the surface very precisely to ensure edges were flat

and specific dimensions (30mm, 20mm and 12mm).

User Testing

With each prototype I found climbers to test the feel of each

board and give feedback for possible variations until I found

the right selection of edges and the best positioning.

Hoard Boards

Despite the sloping edges the Hoard Boards

hangboard was developed with a fulcrum

mechanism that makes the board hang against

your hand rather than bending the other way

under weight

This is to improve the wrist position and reduce

wasted energy trying to keep the board on your

fingers so it doesn't slip out.

Metolius

Manufacturing

The boards were carved using a 3 axis CNC machine, conducting a draft analysis would prove that the form was manufacturable. Further the holes for the paracord had to be 1/2 inch in diameter so that the bit could go through without further processing required.

Laser Etching

The Hoard Boards whitespace relies in collectible, limited edition boards. With a potential partnership with the South Eastern Climbing Coalition, Hoard Boards will have different collectible maps etched on the back of them of popular climbing areas in the South East.
